Scaling of space–time modes with Reynolds number in two-dimensional turbulence

چکیده
It has been estimated that the number of spatial modes (or nodal values) required to uniquely determine a two-dimensional turbulent flow at a specific time is finite, and is bounded by Re for forced turbulence and Re for decaying turbulence. The usual computational estimate of the number of space–time modes required to calculated decaying two-dimensional turbulence is N ∼ Re. These bounds neglect intermittency, and it is not known how sharp they are. In this paper we use an adaptive multi-scale wavelet collocation method to estimate for the first time the number of space–time computational modes N necessary to represent two-dimensional decaying turbulence as a function of Reynolds number. We find that N ∼ Re for 1260 Re 40 400 over many eddy turn-over times, and that temporal intermittency is stronger than spatial intermittency. The spatial modes alone scale like Re. The β-model then implies that the spatial fractal dimension of the active regions is 1.2, and the temporal fractal dimension is 0.3. These results suggest that the usual estimates are not sharp for adaptive numerical simulations. The relatively high compression confirms the importance of intermittency and encourages the search for reduced mathematical models of two-dimensional turbulence (e.g. in terms of coherent vortices).

Experimental study and numerical simulation of three dimensional two phase impinging jet flow using anisotropic turbulence model
Hydrodynamic of a turbulent impinging jet on a flat plate has been studied experimentally and numerically. Experiments were conducted for the Reynolds number range of 72000 to 102000 and a fixed jet-to-plate dimensionless distance of H/d=3.5. Based on the experimental setup, a multi-phase numerical model was simulated to predict flow properties of impinging jets using two turbulent models. Mesh...
متن کاملNumerical Predictions of Turbulent Mixed Convection Heat Transfer to Supercritical Fluids Using Various Low Reynolds Number k-e Turbulence Models
There are a number of systems in which supercritical cryogenic fluids are used as coolants or propellant fluids. In some modern military aircraft, the fuel is pressurized above its critical point and used as a coolant to remove heat from the aircraft engine. Accurate prediction of heat transfer coefficients to turbulent flows of supercritical fluids is essential in design of such systems. One o...
متن کاملSimulation of Low Reynolds Number Isotropic Turbulence Including the Passive Scalar
Full simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence containing a homogeneous passive scalar were made at low Reynolds numbers and various Prandtl numbers. The results show that the spectral behavior of the two fields are quite similar; both fields decay as power-law functions of time. However. the decay exponent is quite dependent on both the Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The decay exponent of...

One of the newest of viscoelastic RANS turbulence models for drag reducing channel flow with polymer additives is studied in different flow and rheological properties. In this model, finitely extensible nonlinear elastic-Peterlin (FENE-P) constitutive model is used to describe the viscoelastic effect of polymer solution and turbulence model is developed in the k-ϵ-(ν^2 ) ̅-f framework. The geome...
متن کاملComputation of the dimension of a model of fully developed turbulence
2014 We compute numerically the attractor dimension of a model of fully developed MHD turbulence both using Lyapounov exponents, and via a counting algorithm. The Lyapounov dimension is found to be essentially given by the total number of modes which lie in the inertial range; the maximal exponent, i.e. the divergence rate of nearby trajectories, is given by the inverse of the shortest time sca...
